Blinddarmwurmfortsatz (Appendix) doch nicht nutzlos?
Drawing upon a series of observations and experiments, Duke University Medical Center investigators postulate that the beneficial bacteria in the appendix that aid digestion can ride out a bout of diarrhea that completely evacuates the intestines and emerge afterwards to repopulate the gut. Their theory appears online in the Journal of Theoretical Biology.

Neu: Schädling resistent gegen Virus
Insects can catch more than a cold from certain viruses. Some viruses can be lethal to pest species – turning their insides to soup – without harming beneficial insects or other organisms. Hence they are used as an environmentally friendly means of biological crop protection worldwide. The proverbial worm in the apple, the codling moth caterpillar, has been controlled in European orchards for years with a baculovirus called codling moth granulovirus (CpGV). But in southwest Germany, some organic apple growers noticed that the virus was losing its effectiveness.

Das klingt fast so als wäre man überrascht, dass auch so ein Apfelwurm es schaffen kann durch Evolution gewisse Resistenzen zu erlangen.
Man versucht jetzt lieber neue Virusvarianten zu finden, um die Resistenz zu überwinden, geht aber davon aus, dass die Resistenz nicht lange überwunden werden kann, selbst wenn neue Varianten anfangs wirken.
Es wäre meiner Meinung nach daher besser, wenn man versucht gleich mit mehreren Waffen gegen den Wurm zu kämpfen, da die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer gleichzeitigen Resistenzbildung gegen alle Waffen unwahrscheinlich sein dürfte.

CO2: “Ich war’s nicht!”
Deep-sea temperatures warmed about 1,300 years before the tropical surface ocean and well before the rise in atmospheric CO2, the study found. The finding suggests the rise in greenhouse gas was likely a result of warming and may have accelerated the meltdown – but was not its main cause.
“You can no longer argue that CO2 alone caused the end of the ice ages.”
The study does not question the fact that CO2 plays a key role in climate.
“I don’t want anyone to leave thinking that this is evidence that CO2 doesn’t affect climate,” Stott cautioned. “It does, but the important point is that CO2 is not the beginning and end of climate change.”

Schade, jetzt kann man nicht mehr behaupten, dass CO2 für das Ende der Eiszeit verantwortlich ist und die Sinnigkeit CO2-senkender Maßnahmen ist meiner Meinung nach damit auch in Frage gestellt. Denn wenn CO2 nicht allein verantwortlich ist für einen Klimawandel, sondern als Folge einer Erwärmung vermehrt produziert wird, dann sollten wir uns vielleicht eher darauf konzentrieren unsere Ozeane abzukühlen… vielleicht mit Trockeneis?
